NoMad/Flat Iron

The neighborhoods are home to some of the best restaurants in Manhattan, excellent and innovative schools.

Welcome to NoMad and Flatiron

Flatiron and NoMad are up-and-coming residential areas after a long history as corporate hubs.

Famous for the triangular Flatiron Building and nearby Madison Square Park, Flatiron and NoMad were underappreciated gems until recently. Tucked just below Midtown in the heart of the city, the neighborhoods are home to some of the best restaurants in Manhattan, excellent and innovative schools, and plentiful high-end shopping. Birthplace of President Theodore Roosevelt, the history of the area is long and rich, as well as apparent in the preserved buildings that still hold onto intricate and historical architectural details.

While Flatiron used to be primarily corporate and is still home to a number of business offices, the neighborhood has had an influx of artists, families, and has even become home to a few over-the-top toy stores, showing its evolvement to a more family-friendly district.

Local Lifestyle

The Flatiron/NoMad area hasn’t always been the most-discussed area of Manhattan — instead, the neighborhoods have been more of a hidden gem. Significantly quieter than other areas, the corporate nature means that evenings and weekends tend towards quiet and relaxing after the bustling weekdays. Gourmet dining options, upscale bars, and numerous museums mean there’s never time to be bored, and the excellent schools attract families who seek innovative educational options.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Flatiron and NoMad are home to some of the best fine-dining restaurants in Manhattan. The extravagant Eleven Madison offers prix fixe tasting menus featuring gourmet and unique dishes, such as white sweet potato salad or shiso eggplant, whereas the infamous Gramercy Tavern serves dishes like roasted duck breast and clam lumache on their tasting menu. For international flavors, try Jua, an upscale Korean restaurant with a seven-course menu carefully curated by internationally famous chef Hoyoung Kim.

After dinner, head to one of the numerous bars in the area. The Ace Hotel Bar offers a luxurious setting to enjoy modern takes on classic cocktails — for instance, the floral-flavored Negroni. 230 Fifth offers a perfect place to enjoy warm summer evenings overlooking the city, or their personal igloos when colder temperatures hit. On the weekends, their Bottomless Brunch is a huge draw to locals, who enjoy endless mimosas and bellinis alongside upscale breakfast favorites. For a full experience, visit UnderCote, a speakeasy tucked under a Korean barbecue restaurant featuring high-end artisan cocktails.

One of the best parts about life in Flatiron and NoMad is how convenient shopping can be. Whether you’re picking up a special treat for your pup from Axel and Tia’s Pet Bakery or ordering a new couch from Interior Define, plenty of stores that suit your needs are within just a few blocks. Of particular note for families with children is the gigantic Lego Store on 5th Avenue, where you can not only pick up some new toys but also see some stunning architectural feats using the classic blocks.

Things to Do

Professional Flatiron and neighboring trendy NoMad may be quieter than other parts of Manhattan, but there’s no shortage of things to do. The obvious highlight is Madison Square Park, which contains a reflecting pool, an adorable playground, a spacious dog run, and is known to host events throughout the year, including a Spring Scavenger Hunt and the annual Party In The Park wine-and-dine event.

Photography enthusiasts and art lovers will enjoy wandering through the Fotografiska Museum, where artisan cocktails can be enjoyed while looking at stunning photography displays. Other art galleries nearby include the Planthouse, featuring artwork in various mediums from local up-and-coming talent.

Sports enthusiasts will definitely want a membership to the New York Sports Club Park Avenue location. The expansive gym includes not only a full exercise area full of top-of-the-line equipment, numerous group classes, and a staff of personal trainers, but there are also tennis courts, basketball courts, and more. Premier Indoor Golf is also nearby, offering the opportunity to improve your swing without leaving the city.

If you have wandering feet but no time, take a mini-vacation by visiting Eataly. Both restaurant and international gourmet grocery store, it’s the perfect place to learn about Italian cuisine, pick up some authentic ingredients, and even purchase a few home goods to take Italy home with you.

Schools

Flatiron and NoMad have access to a number of impressive educational facilities, especially some innovative programs that have proven to be highly effective.
